Today I decided to post some lovely photos of one of my favorite publisher’s bindings in our Mabbott Poe collection of Edgar Allan Poe materials. Here is our 1857 edition of The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe, With Original Memoir. This books really stands out of the shelf due to its bright green cloth binding. There are many other wonderful books to be found in this collection, which was donated by Thomas Ollive Mabbott. Mabbott also has a manuscript collection at Iowa, and the finding aid gives a description of his book collection - check it out below:

“Thomas Ollive Mabbott also bequeathed his collection of books by and about Edgar Allan Poe to the University of Iowa Libraries, and they continue to be a seperately shelved sequence in Special Collections. The collection is particularly rich in appearances of Poe’s works in magazines. An endowment accompanied the gift, and the income from this fund has allowed the Libraries to add fine press and other editions of Poe’s work as well as books about Poe. In 2003 the collection was greatly enriched with the gift by Burton Pollin of his collection of illustrated Poe – several hundred books in diverse languages containing illustrated versions of Poe’s works.”

COLOPHON: Published on October 31, 1983 in the bicentennial year of the birth of Washington Irving. Set in 6 pt Fairfield Lintoype with initial caps in Fry’s Ornamented. Printed on Curtis Colophon paper. Illustrated by Sarah Chamberlain. Printed by Jane Pomeroy at the Burntcoat Press. Bound at the Green Dragon Bindery. Endpapers for the deluxe edition marbled by Christopher Weimann. Designed by Rebecca Saady Bingham. Of an edition of 150, numbers 1-35 are deluxe copies. This is number 4. Signed by Rebecca Saady Bingham. Featuring original wood engravings and fore-edged painting by Sarah Chamberlain. The book is printed letterpress in two colors. Some pages are in three colors. In addition to wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain and photoengraved details used as decorations, a ten-cent Legend of Sleepy Hollow postage stamp is tipped in as an illustration. Of all the artist books we have in our department, Nest of Patience is by far my favorite. I love everything from the girdle book shape to the use of feathers. We have posted this on our Tumblr before, and Colleen already did a great job of describing it, so instead of reinventing the wheel, I’ll share her description of it:

“Nest of Patience is a new acquisition from Kristin Alana Baum (Blue Oak Bindery) and Cheryl Jacobsen, calligraphy instructor at the Center for the Book. A collaboration based on a medieval girdle book, Nest of Patience is a contemporary Book of Hours contemplating the concept of patience by way of words, poetry, fortunes, and nature. The book begins with a spiritual calendar of days and proceeds with eight sections, each headed with a totem animal. Full vellum text block includes hand-stitched indigo-dyed slunk panels, hand-lettered texts, illuminations, and sewn-in found objects relating to patience. Wooden board binding, sewn on hemp cords and laced into beech boards.”

Pictured above are some wonderful images from our 1682 copy of Jacob Boehme; the Teutonic philosopher, or as our catalog record puts it, Des gottseeligen hocherleuchteten Jacob Böhmens Teutonici Philosophi alle theosophische Wercken …

This theological text was written by Jacob Boehme (Jakob Böhme), who is considered an original thinker within the Lutheran tradition. The majority of his writings concern the nature of sin, evil, and redemption. These themes can be seen in some of the detailed images.

For those who appreciate a book with gauffered edges, here is our 1564 copy of Imitatio Christi. As seen in the images, the edges of this book are incredibly detailed, and the front and back covers also have some beautiful designs. This book is also surprisingly tiny - it only measures 13 cm tall! 

This book might look familiar to frequent followers to our page…it is the same book in our avatar in our header!

I love to browse the Q section of the stacks - growing up on Bill Nye the Science Guy, I have a healthy appreciation for the general sciences! This interesting book really caught my eye, as there are a wide variety of images made me want to learn more about it. Published in 1636, here is Delicia Physic-Mathematicae, a book about scientific recreations and ideas for inventions. Daniel Schwenter (Schwender) is the author of this book, and he was also a mathematician, inventor, poet, and librarian!
